Working the Satellites

First starting out, going with the FM may be easiest since that has the lowest equipment overhead for some of us.  As you get more comfortable with operating the FM birds, you can branch off into working SSB birds or Digital (i.e. packet or soon PSK31).  Some of the digital birds like AO-51 require a hardware TNC that will receive and transmit data at 9600 baud and a radio that will allow you to get the audio well before the speaker gets it.

Under operating tips, I have put suggestions I have gotten along the way and things I have learned that should make your working the satellites more enjoyable.

When you click on Antenna Options, you will see each of the antenna types that I have used.  The FM Birds option will should you how to program your radio and work through each bird.  The Other Leo's button will take you through using the SSB and Digital birds (i.e. packet, psk31, etc).  One thing you need to know now is that your antennas will have to be outside.  While you might be able to get away with a groundplane in the attic for transmitting, that will be the exception to the rule.  The antennas will need to be outside with a clear of a view as possible to the horizon and no trees/foliage.  The higher you can put the antennas means the lower to the horizon you can work a particular satellite.

As you look at the different types of birds, you will see Level 1 or some number to the right.  This is an indication of the level of difficulty to access the particular type of satellite.  Level 1 will be the easiest to work, with Level 2 requiring a little more experience/equipment, etc.

Enjoy !!
